Footnotes
This impressive vase of flowers is on a scale used by Mario Nuzzi as a standard for his largest works depicting single vases. One of the most sizeable groups of still lifes by the artist is recorded in the Mansi Collection, Lucca, with eleven works listed in an inventory of 1682. Eight of these were on a larger scale, of the same dimensions of the present works, two were smaller and one was much smaller and on crystal (see: U. Bocchi and G. Bocchi, Pittori di natura morta a Roma. Artisti Italiani 1630-1750, Casalmaggiore 2005, pp. 107-116, fig. MN 43-50.).
It is possible that the present work also formed part of a large series. Given the prominence of the crab on the vase, it may be that it was in a group depicting the signs of the zodiac.
