Literature
A. Morassi, Guardi: i dipinti, Venice, 1984, vol. I. p.492, cat. no.987; vol. II, ill., fig. 870
Antonio Morassi suggests, on the basis of its unusually bold palette and lively brushwork, the present capriccio dates to between 1760 and 1770. He notes that it is part of a series of four works (together with cat. nos. 854, 863 and 980; see literature), all of which were at one time with Knoedler Galleries in New York. A preparatory drawing (pen and ink, 19 x 26.2cm) for this painting is in the Museo Correr, Venice (see: R. Palluchini, I disegni del Guardi al Museo Correr di Venezia, 1943, p. 56, no. 138).
