Footnotes

Provenance
Private Collection, UK, for at least 50 years

Storck is not known to have ever visited Italy and his Mediterranean views are imaginary scenes using Italianate elements. His impressive knowledge of landmarks and architecture appears to have been inspired by the works of his contemporaries, such as Jan Asselijn, who returned to The Netherlands with landscapes and capricci clearly influenced by their travels to Italy.
