Although the sitter of the present portrait is unknown one can assume he was a wealthy burgher. He is depicted here, in a jaunty masculine pose that was very fashionable at the time, with one hand on his hip and the other to his chest in a gesture that implies honesty or genuineness. Stylistically the present work is comparable to a portrait of a gentleman, signed and dated 1657, offered at Christie's, London, 12 September 2018, lot 251 and Portrait of Jan van Loon, signed and dated 1659, in the Museum van Loon, Amsterdam (inv. no. L.19).
