Footnotes

The size and sumptuous decoration of this vase attest to the quality of craftsmanship during the Qianlong period. The scene of the Peach Festival on Mount Kunlun marks the convergence of the celestial and earthly realms to celebrate the Queen Mother of the West, Xiwangmu, and the ripening of the peaches of Immortality. For a related pair of vases, mark and period of Jiaqing, see John Ayres, Chinese and Japanese Works of Art in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen, London, vol. 1, pl. 690.
