Provenance
Purchased from Obert Gallery, South Africa;
A private collection.

As a multi-disciplinary artist, Kudzani Chiuria investigates the socio-politics that effect South Africans today, these predominantly being oppression and the consequential realities that result from racism, corruption, and inequality. Whilst he was born the year following Zimbabwe's political independence (known as Southern Rhodesia under colonial rule), Chiuria maintains an observation of the presence of colonial legacy within his work, confronting the devastating effects it had on his country whilst also being known to criticise the post-colonial rulers, an action that would lead to his self imposed exile after being threatened with arrest in 2008.

Split between two panels, it could be said that the present work provides us with an interplay of the title of the work and the break from traditional understanding of a painting. Although part of the same artwork, the work only makes full sense when the two separate entities are unified, one above the other, counteracting their 'displacement'. It could be said that this unification completes the work.
