The present work was painted circa 1885 and can be compared to catalogue nos. 125 and 134 in the catalogue raisonné of Jean Béraud's work. The scene is instantly recognisable as the Avenue des Champs-Elysées with the Arc de Triomphe, resplendently bathed in sunshine, a short walk away. A young woman in the foreground is in the motion of turning away from the viewer, but her gaze lingers and invites us to join her and her fellow Parisians in promenading along the avenue. The crimson parasol and flowers on her hat make sure she is the centrepiece of an iconic Parisian scene of the Belle Époque, the like of which Beraud is most fondly remembered for having painted.
We are grateful to Patrick Offenstadt for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
