Provenance
Private collection, Denmark.

Exhibited
(Possibly) London, Royal Academy, 1884, no. 462.

The painting relates to a suite painted by Calderon as part of the decorative scheme for the dining room at Wilton Park, near Beaconsfield, the home of Sir John Aird the civil engineer who moved the Crystal Palace from Hyde Park to Sydenham; he also served as Conservative Member of Parliament for Paddington North from 1887 to 1906 and became the first mayor of Paddington in 1900. Sir John was an avid art collector; in 1883 he gifted a large number of works on paper by Sir Edwin Landseer to the Royal Academy and his dining room was decorated with eight other pictures by Calderon, including Hops, The Olive and The Vine. Although dated later, the present work is possibly the painting exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1884, no. 462, alongside Currants: decorative panel for a dining-room, no. 588.
