Fausto Zonaro was born in Veneto, Italy, but is best known for his realist depictions of Turkish life, painted during his time in Istanbul where he moved, at his wife's request, in 1891. He quickly adapted to the Turkish way of life and following an introduction by the Italian ambassador, Zonaro was appointed court artist to the last Ottoman Sultan, Abdul Hamid II (1876-1909) in 1896. The present lot dates from after this period when Zonaro had returned to Italy during the Trablusgarp War and settled in San Remo; from here he painted numerous landscapes of the Ligurian coastline and lifestyle.
