The present lot is based on an archaic prototype, fanggu, or ritual wine vessel of the Shang dynasty. The Qianlong Emperor was known for his admiration of 'the ancient ways'. During his reign, not only a large number of antiquities were collected at Court, and many works of art, such as the present fanggu, were made with archaic references.
