A RARE PAIR OF CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL BLACK-GROUND MAGPIES ON STANDS

17th/18th century
The birds naturalistically modelled with gilt-bronze beaks and large eyes, the bodies delicately enamelled black, the wings with white and neatly folded with finely detailed feathers, perched on wood stands. The largest, 28cm (11in) long. (2).

十七/十八世紀 銅胎掐絲琺瑯喜鵲一對

The Chinese term for magpies is (xique 喜鵲), which literally means 'bird of joy'. The magpie has long been regarded as a bird of good omen in Chinese culture. See a related black-ground cloisonné enamel magpie, Qianlong, illustrated by B.Quette, Cloisonné: Chinese Enamels from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties , New Haven and London, 2011, p.277, no.105.
