Footnotes

清康熙 銅胎掐絲琺瑯鎏金龍紋蹬一對

Compare with a stirrup cast with similar gilt-bronze dragon-heads depicted on a painting illustrated in Life in the Forbidden City of Qing Dynasty, Beijing, 2007, pp.70-71. The painting, attributed to the Jesuit painter Giuseppe Castiglione, portrays the young Qianlong Emperor seated on horseback dressed in formal military regalia. A related stirrup and saddle, Shunzhi, is illustrated in Ibid., no.115.

A related pair of cloisonné-enamelled stirrups was exhibited in the Museum fur Kunsthandwerk, Frankfurt am Main, illustrated by G.Gabbert Avitabile, Die Ware aus dem Teufelsland, Hannover, 1981, no.64. See also a further example of a pair of cloisonné-enamel stirrups, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, acc.no.1327-1871.
