Guandi (162-220), also known as Guan Yu, originally was a heroic general of the Period of Three Kingdoms. Over the centuries, Guan Yu's achievements have been largely elaborated. Guan Yu has become the incarnation of the strength to impel, inspire and motivate, interpreted as the God of Wealth, the God of War and the Protector God of Temples. See P. Duara, 'Superscribing Symbols: The Myth of Guandi, Chinese God of War', The Journal of Asian Studies, 1988, vol.47, pp.778-795.
