The red glaze was considered to be one of the greatest achievements of Imperial porcelain production during the Kangxi reign. The techniques of making successful red glazed wares had been lost since the Ming dynasty, but due to innovators such as Lang Tingji (1663-1715) who demonstrated a commitment to precision and technological innovation, the red glaze was perfected; see J.Hay, 'The Diachronics of Early Qing Visual and Material Culture', in The Qing Formation in World Historical Time, Cambridge, 2004, p.318. See also Feng Xianming and Geng Baochang, Selected Porcelain of the Flourishing Qing Dynasty, Beijing, 1994, p.36.
See three related copper-red glazed bowls, Kangxi marks and of the period, illustrated by P.Y.K.Lam, in Shimmering Colours: Monochromes of the Yuan to Qing Periods, Hong Kong, 2005, p.101, pl.39.
Compare also with a related fine copper-red glazed bowl, Kangxi mark and period, which was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, on 28 May 2014, lot 3434.
