Provenance: a European private collection, and thence by descent

來源:歐洲私人收藏,並由後人保存迄今

Sancai-glazed dishes such as the present lots were constructed over moulds with decorative motifs incorporated on it. The shape, based on gold and silver prototype, would have been relatively easy to produce in sheet metal and more difficult to make in clay. Several related Liao dynasty oblong plates with foliate rims include one illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Porcelain of the Song Dynasty I, Hong Kong, 1996, p.281, no.255; see also two related examples of sancai-glazed oblong dishes with foliate rims, Liao dynasty, decorated with flowers, unearthed from the Liao dynasty tomb in Ningcheng County, Inner Mongolia, illustrated by H.M Chen, Gilded Splendor. Treasures of China's Liao Empire (907-1125), New York, 2006, p.359. Two related sancai-glazed square dishes, Liao dynasty, in the Museum of Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, are illustrated by Ibid., p.353.

Compare with a similar sancai-glazed quatrefoil saucer dish, Liao dynasty, which was sold at Sotheby's Paris, on 20 April 2022, lot 244.
