The Vacheron Constantin 222 was launched in 1977 to mark the 222nd anniversary of the brand. Often mistakenly attributed to Gerald Genta, the model was designed by 24-year-old Jörg Hysek a former designer with Rolex, incorporating many similar ideas to the Nautilus and Royal Oak. The monobloc, tonneau shaped case features a distinctive bezel and a high-quality integrated bracelet.
The model was offered in three sizes, the 37mm 'jumbo' size, 34mm as shown with the current model, and 24mm. According to research, it is believed that there were over 1,300 of 24mm models produced, approximately 1000 in 34mm and around 700 of the 'jumbo' size.
Long overlooked by collectors, the 222 is beginning to amass more and more interest thanks to its rarity and exceptional quality. Interest in the model has also been elevated thanks to the relaunch of the 222 in 18K gold last year by Vacheron Constantin.
