AN INLAID GOLD-LACQUER THREE-CASE INRO
Japan, by Hara Yoyusai (1769-1845), Edo Period (1615-1868), 19th century
Of upright form, decorated in gold, pewter and shell takamaki-e with a continuous design of flowering warabi (western bracken fern) and tanpopo (dandelions), after a painting by Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1829), inscribed on one side in gold hiramaki-e Hoitsu hitsu, the interior of unadorned matt gold lacquer; signed in gold hiramaki-e on the base of the bottom case Yoyusai. 7.2cm (2 3/4in) x 5cm (2in).
