A Meissen pair of large bouquetière figures, circa 1745

Modelled by J.J. Kaendler, the lady wearing a white bodice with pink stomacher heightened in gilding, a white skirt and a pale yellow apron decorated with indianische Blumen, carrying a grape hod with pierced top on her back, the gentleman wearing a turquoise hat, a white jacket decorated with gilding and indianische Blumen and white breeches, balancing a basket with pierced top on his left knee, his foot balancing on a squash, both bases applied with branches, leaves and flowers, 28.7cm and 27.5cm high, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue to the rear of the base (she), very faint traces of crossed swords mark in blue (he) (her upper body restored) (2)

The models are recorded in Kaendler's Taxa of 1740-44: '1. Gärtner Figur mit eine Fuße auff einem Kürbße ruhend, mit beiden Händen aber einen Korb haltend, Bluhmen drein zu setzen' [1 gardener figure with one foot resting on a squash, with both hands holding a basket, to put flowers in] and '1. Weibsbild mit der Weinbutte auffm Rücken , darein Bluhmen zu sezen.' [1 woman with grape hod on her back, to put flowers on].
