A Meissen two-handled chocolate beaker and saucer from the 'Red Dragon' service, circa 1739

Painted in iron-red and gilding with two phoenixes in the centre of the saucer and dragons and auspicious symbols around the rims of both, the ear-shaped handles embellished in gilding and iron-red, the beaker: 7cm high; the saucer: 13cm diam., crossed swords marks in underglaze-blue, incised V inside footrim of saucer, impressed dot and 9 to beaker (2)

Two dozen chocolate beaker of this type were delivered to the Dresden Hofkonditorei by 1739, and 123 beakers are recorded in the inventory of 1752 (J. Weber, Meißener Porzellane mit Dekoren nach ostasiatischen Vorbildern, I (2013), p. 144 and p. 147).
