A rare pair of Meissen models of red squirrels, mid 18th century

Modelled by J.J. Kaendler, each naturalistically modelled and coloured, wearing a collar with a black chain attached to the base, one holding a nut in its paws, the other with a nut in its mouth, the bases applied with leaves and flowers and shaded in frren, 20cm and 21cm high, crossed swords marks in underglaze-blue to edge of bases (one chain restored, one metal, one squirrel (with nut in mouth) with some restoration) (2)

Footnotes

For a discussion of both models, which probably date to around 1749, see M. Kunze-Köllensperger, Sammlung Ritter Kempski von Rakoszyn (2008), pp. 76-78, nos. 50 and 51.

Saleroom notices

Please note there is some further damage to the squirrel without the nut in its paws, please refer to the completed condition report online for further information.
