A Regence ormolu mounted kingwood commode

Circa 1725
The later marble top with an ovolo moulded edge, above two short and two long walnut lined drawers, each drawer front with a quarter veneered tablet encompassed by half veneered banding within a surround, interspersed by three brass flute-mounted rails, flanked by clasp mounted angles, each mount comprising a mask of the goddess Ceres wearing a diadem-encrusted headdress, volute scrolls, acanthus and a floral pendant, over a shaped apron mounted with scrolled foliage and a central flowerhead, on acanthus headed, beaded and trellis-inset volute scrolled sabots, each quarter veneered end with a lozenge inlaid tablet, with the pencil inscription: 'Parlez Vous/... (?) Francois Mon...' 129cm wide x 62cm deep x 84cm high, (50 1/2in wide x 24in deep x 33in high)

Also, a commode by Francois Mondon (1694-1770) with some similar mounts, brass fluted drawer rails and of comparable type to the present example is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Francais du XVIIIeme Siècle, 1989, Paris, fig. A, p. 584. Another late Regence commode of tombeau form, albeit one by Mathieu Criaerd (1689-1776), which again has closely related mounts and conforming inset flute mounts to the above model also appears Ibid, p. 212.
