The official opening of École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine (EBAI) in colonial Hanoi in 1925 led to a new chapter in the development of Vietnamese modern art. Born in Marseille in 1896, Joseph Inguimberty was one of the first teachers at the EBAI. Together with the EBAI founder Victor Tardieu and other fellow teachers, Inguimberty not only trained a pioneering generation of Vietnamese artists but also laid the foundation for the growth of modern art in Vietnam by merging the techniques of Western art with local mediums and themes. Moreover, he played a seminal role in shaping the evolution of Vietnamese lacquer painting as a fine art form.

Inguimberty returned to France in 1946 and moved to Menton, his wife's hometown, while keeping a pied-à-terre in Marseille. The paintings that he created at the time drew inspirations from the alluring landscapes in southern France, as shown in the present two lots titled Vue des vallées and Landscape in the South of France. Executed through the artist's dynamic brushwork, both paintings convey a sense of tranquillity and display the brilliance of plein-air painting with a focus on the atmospheric interplay of luminous palettes and radiant outdoor light.
