U Lun Gywe, born in 1930, is one of the Myanmar artists best known internationally and plays a significant role in Myanmar's art circles. He graduated from the Art Institute of Specialist Teachers' Training in Yangon in 1954 and received an opportunity under a one-year cultural exchange programme in 1964-65. In 1971, U Lun Gywe studied and learnt restoration techniques in East Germany; he also made trips to East Berlin, Dresden and Potsdam, where for the first time he encountered the works by European masters.
U Lun Gywe considers his style of painting impressionist characterised by spontaneous textures and fluid brushstrokes. His dynamic paintings demonstrate a mastery of capturing the transience of light and shadow. U Lun Gywe upholds Buddhist values throughout his life and artistic career. Although U Lun Gywe is known for his figurative work of elegant and beautiful Myanmar ladies, he always returns to his favourite subject—the sacred landscape of Bagan. The present lot Bagan at its best conveys a sense of serenity and allows the viewer to immerse in Bagan's tranquil spiritual environment.
