GREENAWAY - PRINTING BLOCKS

A collection of 5 woodblocks for 'Marigold Garden', and approximately 36 packets of further printing blocks, the woodblocks probably engraved by Edmund Evans, 110 x 150mm. to 65 x 140mm., the packets generally containing 3 blocks for different colours of the same image, copper plates mounted on wood, around 150 x 120mm. but a few smaller, mostly wrapped in old brown paper surrounded by proofs of the various colour layers and the final print, [c.1885-1905] (quantity)

Footnotes

Fine wood-engraved blocks for Marigold Garden, comprising the illustrations "On the Wall Top" (p.36), "Mammas and Babies" (p.41), "Under the Rose Arches" (p.47), "Miss Molly and the Little Fisher" (p.54) and "The Little Jumping Girls" (p.55). Many of the woodblocks for Marigold Garden were sold by Sotheby's in 1973, reappearing in 1979 ("Property of a Gentleman"); however, the present group appears not to originate from those auctions.

The accompanying copperplates are for the colour plates in Spielmann and Layard's Kate Greenaway, published by A. & C. Black in 1905.
