GREENAWAY (KATE)
Footnotes
THE HOUGHTON COPY of a legendary Greenaway rarity, with tipped-in letter signed by E. Wilfred Evans of Edmund Evans Ltd., dated 5 May 1910, to Maggs Bros. confirming that "there were only eight (8) copies printed of the Kate Greenaway Album."
Greenaway originally prepared these drawings as tiny vignettes for her 1880 Birthday Book for Children, a copy of which is included in the lot. "Edmund Evans apparently suggested that these miniature illustrations would make an interesting album so the book was produced but never published" (Schuster & Engen). This copy appears to be the one described and illustrated within the Morgan Library catalogue, Early Children's Books and their Illustration (no. 179, 1975).
Provenance: Arthur A. Houghton Jr. (1906-1990), booklabel; Christie's, 14 June 1979, lot 238; Sotheby's, 10 July 2003, lot 368.
