A DUAN STONE CARVED 'LANDSCAPE' SNUFF BOTTLE
18th century
Of rectangular form, carved on one side with a mountainous landscape beside a river with a sampan floating by the moor with gnarled pine and wutong trees, the other side with calligraphic inscription and seal, all surmounted by cylindrical neck, stopper, box. 6cm (2 3/8in) high. (2).

The inscription on the snuff bottle reads:
戊子菊月馥亭製
Which may be translated as
'Made in Futing in the Wuzi year (corresponding to 1768) in the Chrysanthemum (September in the Lunar calendar) month.
With the seal: 有山 (Youshan).
Futing was the studio name of Pan Yi'ao 潘奕鏊 (active during the Qianlong reign). Pan was known for being good at painting and calligraphy, as well as making Buddhist images.
鼻烟壺扁瓶形，直口，橢圓形圈足。壺體兩面分別雕刻山水與棣書「戊子菊月馥亭製」，小篆落款「有山」。
「馥亭」是清代畫家潘奕鏊的號，字「有山」，清乾隆年間江蘇吳縣人，工畫山水人物及草蟲。
由此可推斷，「戊子」年指的是乾隆三十三年，公元1768年，菊月為中國傳統陰曆對九月的別稱。
