AN ARCHAISTIC YELLOW AND RUSSET JADE VASE AND COVER
Deftly carved, of ovoid pear-shape rising from a spreading foot to the waisted neck and flaring rim, flanked by a pair of mythical beast-head handles suspending loose rings, the body carved in low-relief around the exterior with archaistic designs of angular scrolls forming taotie masks, between rope-twist bands and further archaistic scroll-work, the neck with upright lappets, the domed cover similarly decorated with pendant lappets, surmounted by a lotus-bud finial, the stone of yellowish-green tone with russet streaks. 29cm (11 3/8in) high. The Qianlong emperor encouraged fanggu (imitating antiquity) and fugu (reviving antiquity), resulting in a revival of archaistic forms in the Imperial court that continued well into the later part of the Qing dynasty. This archaistic trend is well encapsulated in the designs carved on the present vase.
Compare with a related yellow jade vase with similar archaistic designs with taotie mask, but without the cover, Qing dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in the Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Jade, 10, Beijing, 2011, p.39, no.15. The proportions and taotie mask on this piece are related to a vase in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in The Refined Taste of the Emperor: Special Exhibition of Archaic and Pictorial Jades of the Ch'ing Court, Taipei, 1997, p.64-65.
黃玉,有瑕斑,扁形,仿古彜器,橢圓形蓋,蓋外飾六出蕉葉紋,間飾蟬紋,圓尖頂紐,紐外雕四垂雲。瓶口外撇,頸、足稍收,鼓腹。頸部浮起蕉葉紋和回紋,間飾蟬紋。肩部飾夔紋四個,腹部兩側浮雕獸面紋兩個,其下琢夔紋四個。頸兩側各有一圓形獸頭吞耳套活環。玉質瑩潤,琢摩精細。這種瓶主要是在宮廷的書桌或几案上作陳設用,借鋻青銅器的紋飾圖案,平添一份莊重和典雅,是清代仿古玉器中常見的裝飾手段。
清宮舊藏一件黃玉獸耳活環獸面紋壺,其器型及紋飾設計與本拍品相似,蓋子缺失,見《故宮博物院藏品大系玉器編-10 清》,北京,2011年,頁39,圖版15;另見一件臺北故宮博物院藏清乾隆灰白玉獸面紋壺,其獸面紋與本器的比例可資比較,錄於張麗瑞著,《宮廷之雅:清代仿古及畫意玉器特展圖錄》,臺北,1997年,頁64-65。
