A HUANGHUALI 'CHI DRAGONS' BRUSHPOT

The large naturalistic vessel deftly carved with tall and slightly flared walls as overlapping magnolia petals, the exterior superbly carved in relief with four writhing chilong chasing flower and lingzhi fungus stems, the base raised on three short short bracket feet, the material of warm dark-honey tone, box. 17cm (6 3/4in) high.

十七世紀 黃花梨雕螭龍花口筆筒
Compare with a similar but smaller zitan brushpot, late Ming dynasty and with a signature of Wen Fu, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Bamboo, Wood, Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn Carvings, Hong Kong, 2002, no.23; see a late Ming dynasty huanghuali stationery holder of closer size to the present lot, which was sold at Bonhams Hong Kong in 27 November 2018, lot 85, and later exhibited in Hong Kong Museum of Art Honouring Tradition and Heritage: Min Chiu Society at Sixty during 18 December 2021 to 28 April 2022.
See also a related smaller Qing dynasty huanghuali brushpot in the British Museum, carved also with four chi dragons grasping lingzhi fungus and flower stems above cloud scrolls, acc.no.:1992,0601.1.
筆筒用黃花梨木製，花瓣形口，猶如玉蘭花盛開，外壁浮雕四只螭龍追逐靈芝、玉蘭、梅花、茶花四組折枝花卉，刻工圓潤生動，為黃花梨雕刻的佳作。
北京故宮博物院藏一件明晚期紫檀木雕花卉圖筆筒可資比較，其造型較小但雕刻風格相似，刻「文父」款，見《故宮博物院藏文物珍品全集：竹木牙角雕刻》，香港，2002年，編號23。另見一例大小與本拍品接近的黃花梨玉蘭花畫斗售於香港邦翰斯，2018年11月27日，拍品85號，於2020年12月18日至2021年4月28日展於香港藝術館《聚道傳承——敏求精舍六十周年》，見同名展覽圖錄，圖版190號。
另可參考一件大英博物館藏清代黃花梨螭龍花口筆筒，體形較小，口銜四組與此拍品相同的折枝花卉，藏品編號：1992,0601.1。
