According to the Chinese classical furniture scholar Wang Shixiang in the book Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture (Beijing, 2018, p.25), the technique of having aprons wrapping completely around the exterior of the piece showcases the advanced engineering that escalates the minimalist aesthetics. Compare with two Ming dynasty huanghuali square stools, illustrated in ibid., pl.9, 11, p.24-25.
