A RARE PAINTED LACQUER 'SNAKE' CUP AND COVER
Warring States Period
The domed cover with steep walls rising to a flat medallion top carved and painted in red and yellow lines with eight intertwining snakes, the lacquered exteriors carved and further painted with twelve sinuous intertwining snakes, the interiors covered in red lacquer, the exteriors and base covered in black lacquer, box. 20.5cm (8 1/8in) high. (2).

Lacquer pieces are relatively well preserved in Chu Kingdom tombs of the Warring States period because of the special architectural designs; for a very similar painted lacquer 'snake' cup and cover with a steeper cover excavated from a Chu tomb close to Hubei Jiangling County, see Zhongguo meishu quanji: qiqi, pl.17, p.84.
群螭交互蟠結，繁而不亂。蓋上八螭，四條紅螭頭向蓋頂正中，四條黃螭頭向蓋沿四周。卮身蟠螭十二條，亦盤身交錯。整器黑地上以朱黃兩色繪條帶紋，飾有蟠繞虬曲的二十條螭，造型生動，刻畫細緻，為一件經過巧思設計的精品，盒内素髹紅漆。
楚墓采用白膏泥密封木結構墓室的方法，對保存漆器極爲有利。比較一件發掘自湖北江陵楚墓群的彩繪木雕蟠螭漆蓋卮，見《中國美術全集：漆器》，河北，1998年，頁84，圖17。
