A RARE PAIR OF BLACK AND RED PAINTED LACQUER 'EAR' CUPS
Western Han Dynasty
Each of elliptical form, with deep rounded sides supported on a flat base, flanked by a pair of 'half-moon' shaped ears set at a low angle, the base, rim of the interior and the ears lacquered in brownish black with red-painted stylised cloud patterns, the exterior lacquered in brownish black with a band of red-painted stylised dots on the rim, box. Each 14cm (5 1/2in) long. (2).

Compare with two similar pairs of ear cups in the Shanghai Museum, with 'cloud and beast' and 'cloud and bird' designs, respectively, illustrated in In a Myriad of Forms: The Ancient Chinese Lacquers, Shanghai, 2018, pp.43-44.
木胎，杯呈橢圓形，口微斂，兩側新月形耳微上翹，弧腹，平底。杯内底以褐黑漆為地，用朱漆繪卷雲紋，内壁髹朱漆。耳，口沿均以褐黑漆為地，朱漆繪紋樣，耳部繪卷雲紋，口沿繪幾何紋。杯外壁素髹褐黑漆，口沿朱繪兩排點紋。
耳部呈新月形的耳杯一般稱作圓耳杯，是漢代最為流行的耳杯樣式。可參考上海博物館藏兩對彩繪雲獸紋及雲鳥紋漆耳杯，見《千文萬華：中國歷代漆器藝術》，上海，頁43-44。
