A RARE BLACK AND RED PAINTED GOLD-INLAID LACQUER BOX AND COVER

Western Han Dynasty
Of rectangular form with rounded corners, lacquered in black, gold-inlaid animals in flight amidst the cloud patterns painted in red and yellow lacquer on four sides and on the top, a silver plate in arrow form is missing with the space reserved and unlacquered, box. 8.5cm (3 3/8in) high.

Compare the form of the present lot with a rectangular case with cloud and beast pattern in the Shanghai Museum, illustrated in In a Myriad of Forms: The Ancient Chinese Lacquers, Shanghai, 2018, pp.56-57.

木胎,盒呈長方形,直壁,平底。盒由套蓋與器身上下套合而成,通體髹黑漆,盒頂及盒外朱漆彩繪雲氣紋,飾有貼金動物穿梭于雲氣之間。器形可參考一件彩繪雲獸紋漆長方盒,見《千文萬華:中國歷代漆器藝術》,上海,2018年,頁56-57。
