As the son of Alexej von Jawlensky – the 'Russian Matisse' - Andreas Jawlensky was immediately inducted into the modernising art world, one his father was shaping through his Expressionist workings with Der Blaue Reiter group. Unsurprisingly he followed in his father's footsteps, launching into his artistic endeavours with the vibrancy of the Fauves and the ideals of the Expressionist movement.
Hailing from his formative years in Wiesbaden, a German city to the west of Frankfurt, the present work is a very rare example of the artist's early oeuvre. Pieces from the pre-war period are rarely seen on the market, as much of Jawlensky's stock was destroyed when his home on the Beethovenstraße was destroyed during an aerial bombardment in February 1945. As such, many of the early works in existence today are those that were sold or gifted before the war. Im Süden is one such work, as it was gifted to Ernst Mayer before he fled to Paris and London to avoid Jewish persecution at the hands of the Nazis – before he fled, he had been Jawlensky's dentist.
