Production of the reference 1680 first began in 1966 and was the first Submariner to feature a date function. The earliest of these models had the depth rating with meters positioned first, followed by feet rating. For over a decade the word 'Submariner' was depicted in red on the dial of the 1680 and as such has since earned the nickname of a 'Single Red Submariner'.
The current lot is being auctioned on behalf of Eastbourne College Inc. (Charity No.307071). The charity's main purpose is the education of children and they are currently fundraising for transformational bursaries to enable children from low-income families to gain places at St Andrew's and Eastbourne College, the two schools in the charity.
Nicholas Meldrum Banton attended St. Andrew's Prep School in Eastbourne, East Sussex from 1933-38 and never forgot those formative years. He credited his life of service in the Royal Navies of England and Canada to the values he learned at the school from an early age. His widow Faith has kindly donated Nicholas' watch to the charity; "the money raised will provide opportunities for other young people to attend this brilliant school in order to learn those same kind of values which ultimately benefit others. There is nothing quite like giving the gift of education and I am sure Nicholas would be delighted to know his precious watch will help support a young person, giving them the best start in life".
