The Cartier Tortue has appeared in the brands repertoire for over a century after Louis Cartier first designed the piece in 1912. French for turtle, the Tortue has a gently curved case and traditionally was a time-only piece. The current lot was recently refurbished directly by Cartier in 2021 bringing the watch back to its former glory. The onyx and diamond set surround to the case and hinged lugs are demonstrative of the principles underlying the Art Deco aesthetic of the time with their sleek geometric shapes and black and white colour scheme. Typical of the period, the movement is stamped E.W.C for European Watch Company.
