First appearing in the early 1960s, this 'exotic' dial manufactured by Singer was nicknamed the 'Paul Newman' by collectors after the American actor wore the watch in promotional posters for the film Winning and thereafter throughout his private life.
By sinking the black subsidiary dials and outer scale within the white dial background, the dial achieves an unusual three-dimensionality and also an instantly recognisable look. As such the Paul Newman has earned its place among the most coveted watches for collectors around the world.
The central white of the dial of this lot has the distinctive and attractive 'Grene' or grained surface giving a matte but slightly sparkling look.
The reference 6239 was the first model of the Daytona series, available in Europe in 1964. The model was produced in stainless steel, 14K gold and 18K gold, and was Rolex's first chronograph model to feature a tachometer scale on the bezel. To further enhance legibility on the dial, the subsidiary dials were printed in a different colour than the main dial. Early models featured only the designation "Cosmograph" on the dial, with "Daytona" being added to later series, after Rolex became associated with the NASCAR car races.
