A photocopy of a letter written by the artist's son accompanies the lot. It reads: "This is a portrait of my mother, Medora Clark, painted by my father, Alson S. Clark at Comfort Island, the Clark family home near Alexandria Bay, New York, in about 1915. Alson and Medora had returned from Europe in 1914 and were spending the summer at Comfort Island. She is posed on the porch with the river and the shore in the background".
