Ginsburg called Kay "her best and dearest working colleague" during her 2019 lecture as the inaugural speaker of the Herma Hill Kay lectureship at UC Berkeley. Kay was the first woman dean at Berkeley's Boalt law school, and with Ginsburg authored the first published set of course materials on sex discrimination and the law and pushed for no-fault divorce as well as safer marriages for women.
