RUTH BADER GINSBURG'S COPY OF SEXUAL POLITICS.

MILLETT, KATE. Sexual Politics. New York: Doubleday & Company, 1970.
Hardcover, without dust jacket.

GINSBURG'S COPY OF MILLETT'S GROUNDBREAKING FEMINIST WORK, WITH HER PERSONAL BOOKPLATE AFFIXED TO THE PASTE-DOWN. Published in 1970 as Ginsburg was beginning her own work on gender inequality, Sexual Politics lays bare the workings of male dominance and patriarchy in literature and culture, and is considered today to be a classic of feminist literary criticism. The work began as Millett's doctoral dissertation, and it investigates the novels of D.H. Lawrence, Henry Miller and Norman Mailer, among others. Millett's book was a surprise best-seller, and set the stage for feminism's "second wave" in the 1970s, during which both she and Ginsburg played major roles.
