Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission was a landmark case argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in 2009 and decided in 2010. The court's conservative majority determined that the free speech clause of the first amendment prohibited the government from restricting independent expenditures for political campaigns by corporations. The decision ushered in the era of big-money campaigns and the super-PAC (political action committee). Ginsburg joined the dissent authored by Justice John Paul Stevens, who wrote, " A democracy cannot function effectively when its constituent members believe laws are being bought and sold."
