A former student of Gros and Vernet, Lehoux developed his career in the fashionable field of Orientalist art. Not content with painting imagined subjects from his studio, he made multiple trips to North Africa and the Middle East, most notably joining renowned Egyptologist, Jean-François Champollion's 1828 expedition to Egypt, where he stayed for two years. There is also evidence that he travelled to Syria with Alexandre de Laborde in January 1827, and ten years later reports from Count de Berton confirm Lehoux's presence in Syria and the Levant. His numerous submissions of Middle Eastern scenes to the Salon enhanced his reputation as an Orientalist artist, and these were no doubt better received as being based on first-hand experiences in these countries.
Lehoux submitted regularly to the Paris Salon from 1831 onwards; aside from scenes of the French countryside (notably St Germain-en-Laye), common themes of his included views of Lebanon, and picturesque Egyptian street encounters. His paintings can be found in the museums of Amiens, Reims, Nantes, and Narbonne.
In the artist's list of paintings, the only 'Café' works listed are 'Café a Damas' (1853) and 'Café Egyptien' (1857). It may therefore be the case that the present work is in fact 'Café a Damas' and not as stated in the catalogue.
