The famous Kestrel, 202 tons, was owned by the Earl of Yarborough, the first Commodore of the Royal Yacht Squadron whose tenure lasted from 1825 until his death in 1846. Menai, another handsome brigantine of 175 tons, was owned by Lord Francis Edgerton, later 1st Earl of Ellesmere, at the time this work was painted.
