Footnotes

Provenance
Jonathan Janson, UK.

Cowes Castle in Cowes on the Isle of Wight was tactically located at the important anchorage of the entrance to the River Medina. Initially built in 1539 by Henry VII to protect England against the threat of invasion from France, it was later decommissioned in 1854. In 1855 the Royal Yacht Squadron leased the building and later bought it to form their new clubhouse. Several remodelling's of the building took place over the years, with the Royal Yacht Squadron employing the architect Anthony Salvin in 1856 to improve the building. Today the location of the castle is a distinctive landmark in yacht races taking place along the coast of the Isle of Wight.
