This work shows a royal yacht arriving off Sheerness and receiving salutes from the flagship at anchor as well as a shore battery. It may simply be recording a routine dockyard visit, but more likely depicts the safe return of either King George I or his son George II from one of their frequent visits to Hanover, the German state which George I continued to regard as his 'home' despite succeeding to the English throne following the death of Queen Anne in 1714.
