Footnotes
The portico clock was one of the most successful neoclassical innovations of the Louis XVI period. The form exists in countless variations. This example features infant fauns playing music, elements found in related clocks, but the present composition appears to be unique. For a discussion of the portico see: Pierre Kjellberg. Encyclopédie de la Pendule Français (1997) pp. 196-205.
