A RARE GERMAN GILT HOUR STRIKING TABLE CLOCK

Date: Last quarter 16th century
Movement: Iron posted frame, iron train, verge escapement now with short pendulum with bob modeled as a cherub head, twin fusees, the going train now fitted with chain, count wheel striking on bell above case (arbor present, hammer missing), alarm work removed
Case: On flaring scalloped base engraved with leafy scrolls inhabited by exotic birds, corner columns with scroll capitals rising from leafy calyx on plinth base, bell above case enclosed by shaped strapwork with finial modeled as a soldier with shield and pike (bent), side panels depicting Saints Peter and Paul, front panel with scene of the Annunciation in a townscape including a tower clock, below later applied roman chapter ring enclosing alarm setting disk, tulip hand, rear panel with numbered disk and baluster hand to indicate hour last struck above vignettes of the Sun and Moon with putti holding hourglass below
Size: 7 ¾ in (20 cm) high
