A rare mid 19th century engraved gilt brass striking and repeating carriage clock with calendar

Japy Freres et Cie,
The tall case with facetted handle over an oval inspection panel, glazed sides and a plinth base, engraved all over with shell-work and foliate sprays, the Roman dial with Breguet-style hands over four subsidiary dials for alarm, date, day and month (both in English) all within a foliate engraved mask on a hatched ground, the spring driven movement with timing screws to the steel balance and club-foot lever escapement, striking the hours and halves on a coiled steel gong mounted high on the backplate, above the calendar setting squares, stamped with the Japy Freres et Cie 1855 Grande Med D'Honneur. Ticking and striking. 19cms (7.5ins) high.
