Footnotes

Another example of the same shape and decoration, but with Japanese Palace inventory number N=17-/W, is in the Malcolm D. Gutter Collection (see M. Santangelo, A Princely Pursuit (2018), cat. no.87, plate 64). In the 1770 inventory of the Japanese Palace six tureens of this type were recorded: 'Sechs Stück detto (Terrinen mit platten Deckel, mit Vögeln und kleinen Blümgen gemahlt), mit einem blätterichten Knopf, 8. Zoll hoch, 9 3/4. Zoll in Diam' [six pieces of the same (tureens with flat-topped covers, painted with birds and small flowers), with a leafy finial, 8 zoll high, 9 3/4 zoll in diameter] (quoted in Claus Boltz, Japanisches Palais-Inventar 1770 und Turmzimmer-Inventar 1769, in Keramos 153 (July 1996), p.72). Two chrysanthemum-shaped bowls in the Dr. Ernst Schneider collection have the same type of Kakiemon decoration (see J. Weber, Meißener Porzellane mit Dekoren nach ostasiatischen Vorbildern, vol. II (2013), pp. 231f, no. 214).
