An early Deruta maiolica hand warmer, circa 1460-80

In the form of a book with a clasp and short flared spout on the top, painted in ochre and blue, one side with the arms of Baglioni of Perugia and inscribed 'VIVA' amidst wavy lines and dashes, the reverse moulded with five bun-feet and 0painted with a circular medallion enclosing geometric panels on a seeded ground, all enclosed by dashes and scrolls, the sides painted with blue and ochre lines, 11.5cm high including spout; 10.5cm across (some restoration)

A two-handled vase with the same arms attributed to Deruta and dated 1475-1500 is in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession no. 670-1884, published by B. Rackham, Catalogue of Italian Maiolica (1977), no. 163.
