Footnotes

Maria Sibylla's Merian's important work on European entomology, the plates depicting butterflies and grubs in juxtaposition with flowers and blossoms. This first Latin edition appeared the year after her death in 1717, the publisher Johannes Oosterwijk having purchased the plates from Maria's daughter Dorothea.
